Hi Scott, I recently took a break from the gym. I really want to come back but feel embarrassed and am having a hard time coming back. It’s not the gym that has made me feel this way. I’m just not in a great place and I need some help coming out of it. I’m also dreading having to answer the “where have you been” question. Help!
Oh, I have sure been here before. I was in a car accident a few years ago, and coming back to the gym was so difficult. Just like you, I did not want to have to answer questions or even be seen. Fortunately for me, I had plenty of good people to help me in my comeback. Here are a few things that really helped me:
- Be open to receiving help. No matter the situation, there are people out there who care about you. Don’t shut them out. Let those people step in when necessary and help you out.
- Be brave. I know this is a state of mind, but you have done this before. You know that you will be welcomed back with open arms. You know that you will not be judged for taking some time for yourself. Stand up and, like the Nike slogan says: Just Do It!
- Set a meeting to talk. I have meetings with returning members all the time and every one of them is afraid for some reason or other to start back to work. You are not alone, but in order to get the ball rolling you need to go in and talk with someone who can help get you back on track.
I hope this helps you with your comeback, We are here for you and so are our members. We can’t wait to see you back in the gym!
