One Dead in Anthem Car Crash

UPDATE: Anthem Community Mourns Crash Victim

A deadly single-car accident on Gavilan Peak Parkway in Anthem choked traffic Thursday evening as passersby described a horrific scene.

“The passenger was the one ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased on scene,” MCSO spokesperson Adella Laredo-Tarango told North Phoenix News. “The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.” Only one vehicle was involved, Laredo-Tarango said.

A friend of the family identified the deceased as Matt Thiss, 36.

Witnesses described a car straddling the low wall around the parking lot of Christ’s Church of the Valley (CCV), near King Drive just north of the Fry’s plaza. The car was nose-down, facing Gavilan Peak Parkway. On social media, several people who had driven past the scene described it as “horrific.”

“The Thiss family moved to Anthem in 1999, part of the first families of Anthem, original Anthem pioneers,” said the friend, Sandy Wagner Struss. “He is survived by his mom, Patty Thiss, sisters Kim and Monica, and a brother, Ryan.”
