Q&A: Hiral Tipirneni, Democratic Candidate CD8

Registered voters in Anthem, Tramonto, New River and Desert Hills can vote in the special general election April 24 for Arizona’s Congressional District 8 (CD8), to fill a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives created by the resignation of Trent Franks in December. In&Out Publications asked each candidate to provide concise answers to these questions. [See Responses from Republican Debbie Lesko]

Do you support the Second Amendment?
Yes, I support Second Amendment rights for law-abiding Americans to obtain firearms through legal channels to protect their homes, themselves and their families, and for hunting and sport.

Do we need stricter gun laws?
The system is clearly broken, and we should address this uniquely American public health crisis in a common-sense manner.

Should teachers be armed to protect against school shootings?
No, teaching our kids and preparing them for the future should remain educators’ top priorities and main focus.

Should we build a physical wall at the border?
I do not think a $26-billion, contiguous wall is the best way to secure our border; we should focus on more agents and better or more wide-spread technology.

Did middle-class Americans get a fair shake in the recent federal tax cuts?
No, especially in the long-term. Nearly all the cuts, particularly the permanent ones, went to corporations and the nation’s wealthiest 1 percent.

Should Arizona support vouchers to help parents pay for private K-12 school tuition?
No, we need to be strengthening our state’s public education system, not gutting its finances.

What should the federal government’s role be in supporting healthcare?
I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of the uninsured. Free-market competition with a robust Medicare buy-in option will expand health care coverage, lower costs and improve the quality of care.
