The public is invited to take a sneak peek at artwork and landscaping designs planned for the new I-17 interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. Construction on the $49 million project is to begin this fall.
On March 22, Arizona Department of Transportation’s Roadside Specialist team will make a formal presentation of the aesthetic treatments planned, followed by a question-and-answer period.
At both interchanges, new bridges will be built over I-17 to accommodate more east-west lanes as well as another lane on I-17. The new Happy Valley Road setup will be a “diverging diamond traffic interchange,” or DDI. Complex to envision, the DDI traffic will direct traffic approaching the bridge over I-17 to move to the left side for easier, direct left turns onto freeway on-ramps, ADOT says. Studies have shown DDIs to be safer and more efficient than conventional interchanges. [Construction Design Details]
