A large tortoise lost its way in Anthem, and the sheriff’s department is looking to reunite it with its owner.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office “is looking for the owner of this lost sulcata tortoise found crossing the street at Anthem Way & Venture Drive,” the agency tweeted Sunday.

Sulcata tortoises are native to north-central Africa and have become popular pets, bred in the United States and common in pet stores, according to Reptiles Magazine.

“As recently as a few decades ago sulcata tortoises were rare in the United States, but they have shown an amazing ability to adapt to various climates and habitats in captivity, and their low cost combined with a curious personality make them tortoises that are commonly sought after by first-time tortoise owners,” the magazine states.

Males can weigh as much as 200 pounds (females generally around 100) and these tortoises can live 70 years or more. They’re generally kept outdoors.

The owner of this one can call 602-876-1011.
