Drawn by the large biking community in Anthem, as well as two annual triathlons in town, Phoenix residents Michael Morgan and Cole Knapp decided to open a bike shop in the Shops at Anthem plaza, a few doors down from Ace Hardware. The full-service shop, called Freedom Cycles, will also sell scooters, to support those who frequent the nearby skate park.

“There’s no shop here,” Morgan said. “They need their own shop.”

They’ll carry Cannondale and Fuji, which also handles SE, Breezer and Kestrel brands. “Kestrel makes a huge line of triathlete bikes,” Morgan said.

Morgan has worked with bikes for 15 years, doing maintenance and managing bike shops. Knapp’s been in retail for two decades. They hope to organize group rides and become part of the biking community. They’ll repair any brand.

Permits in hand, Morgan and Knapp are putting the store together themselves and aim to open by Oct. 1.

Will they sell skateboards? That hasn’t been decided, Morgan said.
