Plans for a temporary fire unit to serve the rapidly growing Norterra area have been finalized, while the city continues to work out details for a permanent fire station on land it owns near I-17 and Jomax Road.
As of Jan. 8, Engine 55, an advanced life support unit, will operate outside of the Residence Inn, located at 2035 W. Whispering Wind Dr., just south of Happy Valley Road, Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Rob McDade told North Phoenix News. The truck will be staffed with four full-time employees from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and the crew will have access to an apartment within the hotel.
The fire department plans is to operate E-55 out of this facility for about eight months before moving into a temporary facility on the Northeast side of I-17 and Jomax, McDade said. A permanent fire station is planned for that site, but has yet to be funded or designed.
The decision to create a temporary station was announced last month, after citizen concerns about emergency response times in the rapidly growing Norterra area, including for a fire that destroyed a playground at Fireside at Norterra. Discuss this Story on Facebook >>>
