Get Out & Beat the Heat: How to Make Fitness a Fun Family Affair

You might be thinking, “Hold on, it’s hotter than hell. How am I going to drag my family out into the heat to have fun with fitness?” Here are four great ways to stay fit and beat the heat—plus see more of this beautiful state we all call home.

1 Stay cool in the pool. Swimming is a great exercise for all ages. Even just playing games with the kids has everyone moving more than when in the house sitting around. Pool play can potentially burn hundreds of calories. Keep a close eye on your little ones, of course, and apply good sunscreen and stay hydrated.

2 Head North and hike. I took my family to Sedona a couple of weeks ago and we hiked the trail up to Cathedral Rock, plus Devils Bridge and several other amazing trails. Each is a great workout and offers amazing views. Afterward, you can stop by Slide Rock or the Grasshopper Point Swimming & Picnic Area to cool down in the cold waters of Oak Creek.

3 Get extreme. Every year we go to Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course (www.flagstaffextreme.com) and have an absolute blast. They offer beginner training for safety, then multiple levels to challenge anyone. Most of the course hangs high in the pines, suspending you in the air as you move through increasingly difficult obstacles.

4 Work out together. Way more kids join the gym in summer, and we love it. I always feel honored when parents trust us with the most important thing in their lives. We love helping kids find a fondness for fitness that they might not find otherwise.

Have an awesome summer, stay fit and stay cool. And, see you in the gym!
