Ever wonder who writes those clever messages on highway signs in Arizona? This one was penned by Phoenix resident Ashley Servatius, as part of an ADOT contest.

“A friend and I were driving and she was alarmed because she thought I was driving 101 miles per hour,” Servatius said. “Little did she know, that was my temperature gauge and not my speedometer. It was a good laugh.”

And so she submitted her “temperature” sign idea to ADOT.

The other winning entry, below, was the genius of Phoenix resident Jim Atkinson, who said HOV-lane violators are a pet peeve. (The minimum fine for violating the HOV-lane law is $400.)

ADOT received more than 6,700 message submissions. More than 8,000 people voted to pick the winners.
