Phoenix Police Now Using Body Cameras Throughout City

The Phoenix Police Department’s Body Worn Camera program began in  2013, in partnership with the US Department of Justice, the Smart Policing Initiative, and Arizona State University, with 56 cameras in the Maryvale Precinct. It grew to 150 cameras over time.

Last month the count was doubled to 300 cameras, and they’re in use throughout the city, in all seven precincts, the department announced today.

“While we continue the process of identifying and purchasing cameras that will meet our future needs, the immediate expansion of our current body worn camera program is another positive step towards increasing our legitimacy in our community,” said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.
