An auto accident on Gavilan Peak Parkway in Anthem this morning injured a bicyclist. Daisy Mountain Fire Department was dispatched to the scene shortly before 10 a.m., said DMFD spokesperson Paul Schickel.

“On arrival, the crew found an injured bicyclist,” Schickel said. “They began treatment at the scene, and transported the patient by ground ambulance to an area hospital.” The bicyclist’s injury was “believed to be a broken rib,” said Sgt. Calbert Gillett with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Gavilan Peak Parkway’s southbound lanes were closed just north of Anthem Way, near the CVS, while MCSO deputies investigated. The roadway was reopened by 10:40 a.m., according to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation.

Other details of the accident and the condition of the bicyclist were not known as of this writing.

Schickel offered some safety advice: “Run, walk, ride and drive defensively. If you’re riding on something with wheels, consider wearing a helmet. Now that the weather is so nice, enjoy the outdoors, but always be watchful especially at intersections.”
