DVUSD Book Club Mails Free Books to Pre-K Kids

For 15 years, In&Out Magazine has been the definitive source of “Everything that’s going on” in and out of the community. We thank you, our readers, as well as the businesses that support the magazine through advertising, for that opportunity. But with little going on, and many businesses suspending or canceling their ads during the Covid-19 crisis, we are suspending publication of the magazine and web sites for the month of May.

Deer Valley Unified School District is giving away books to any kid age 3 to 5 who is not yet enrolled in kindergarten. The Big Kid Book Club, new this year, aims to connect the district with parents before their kids enter the system.

“We don’t meet many of parents until after they have enrolled their child in kindergarten,” said DVUSD spokesperson Monica Allread. “We wanted to connect with parents earlier to share advice for preparing their child for school and provide information about our extraordinary kindergarten program.”

The district periodically mails a book to each club member, along with helpful advice for parents. Promotion of the program began about two weeks ago, and already 100 children are signed up. [Sign Up Here]

The program is paid for out of the general fund, Allread said. “We have had success in the past with business partners, so if the book club is successful and continues, we may look for business partners to help fund it into the future,” she said.
