After an attempted traffic stop on I-17 north of Phoenix Sunday morning that led to shots being fired at state troopers and a chase into North Phoenix, two suspects were taken into custody at a bagel shop in Tramonto.

At 8 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper attempted to stop a Honda passenger car for a traffic violation on southbound I-17, about a mile north of Black Canyon City, according to a DPS statement. The driver fled and a pursuit began.

About 6 minutes after the chase began, suspects in the fleeing car, which DPS learned in the intervening moments had been stolen from New Mexico, fired shots at troopers’ vehicles.

The stolen car exited I-17 westbound on Carefree Highway, according to the DPS account. Numerous law enforcement vehicles and at least two helicopters converged on the scene from DPS, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Phoenix Police Department.

The stolen car was found behind Albertsons in the Tramonto Marketplace, just north of the Carefree Highway.

After a search with the help of witnesses, the suspects were taken into custody without incident — no shots were fired — at Hot Bagels and Deli in the same plaza.

UPDATE 12:36 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23: The suspects have been booked into the Maricopa County Jail. DPS identified the driver as Tiffany Avalos, 30, and the passenger as 25-year-old Ray Rudy Saucedo. Both are from Phoenix.
