Stepping Stones Charter School Expanding

For 15 years, In&Out Magazine has been the definitive source of “Everything that’s going on” in and out of the community. We thank you, our readers, as well as the businesses that support the magazine through advertising, for that opportunity. But with little going on, and many businesses suspending or canceling their ads during the Covid-19 crisis, we are suspending publication of the magazine and web sites for the month of May.

With enrollment at its maximum, Stepping Stones Academy, on 7th Street east of Tramonto, is adding six additional classrooms and a high-school sized gymnasium.

The extra classroom space will be used to accommodate a program expansion within the curriculum, said Principal Dedre Stewart-Alliger. “We have increased our microsociety program to offer more real-world types of classes (i.e. physical fitness, animal care, movie-making) and increased our theater and music programs,” she said. “We also plan to expand our technology lab and increase our use of technology as space allows.”

The school currently uses its multipurpose room for P.E., and with the need for classroom additions, Stewart-Alliger said it made sense to complete both projects at once.

Stepping Stones currently offers after-school programs, including basketball, flag football, and soccer for K-6th grades and volleyball for 5th-8th grades, so the new gym will allow for an expanded athletic program and will also be used for practices and games.
