EPCOR to Explain Why Anthem’s New Water Rates Are So High

For 15 years, In&Out Magazine has been the definitive source of “Everything that’s going on” in and out of the community. We thank you, our readers, as well as the businesses that support the magazine through advertising, for that opportunity. But with little going on, and many businesses suspending or canceling their ads during the Covid-19 crisis, we are suspending publication of the magazine and web sites for the month of May.

Anthem residents east of I-17 can hear from EPCOR and ask questions about the new water rates, which rose 35 percent for a typical customer on April 1, based on a decision by the Arizona Corporation Commission. Anthem residents now pay roughly double what EPCOR’s Sun City West residents pay.

The interim rates will be in place until a permanent rate case is decided, likely more than a year from now. However, AZCC commissioner Andy Tobin has questioned the legality of the new rates and his commission’s rush to approve them. “I would not be surprised if the citizens joined together in a rate referendum in order to make their voices more clearly heard,” Tobin said in a recent statement.
