Full Closures of I-17 Planned in North Phoenix

For 15 years, In&Out Magazine has been the definitive source of “Everything that’s going on” in and out of the community. We thank you, our readers, as well as the businesses that support the magazine through advertising, for that opportunity. But with little going on, and many businesses suspending or canceling their ads during the Covid-19 crisis, we are suspending publication of the magazine and web sites for the month of May.

Multiple full closures of I-17 are planned this week into November, along with lane restrictions and reconfiguration of frontage roads, all related to the construction of new overpasses at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. The first full closure of all lanes in both directions will occur this weekend, but it’s just an overnighter.

I-17 will be closed in both directions at Happy Valley Road from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, ADOT announced. During this time, Happy Valley Road, the roundabouts and I-17 ramps will remain open. Northbound drivers can exit I-17 at Deer Valley Road and use northbound 19th Avenue to westbound Jomax Road. Southbound drivers can exit I-17 at Jomax Road and use southbound 19th Avenue to eastbound Deer Valley Road.

In one of the most potentially disruptive closures related to the project so far, all lanes of I-17 in both directions will be fully closed at Pinnacle Peak Road from 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. During that time, Pinnacle Peak Road and all its onramps and off-ramps will be closed as crews demolish the old bridge. [See map below for a full list of the closures.]

Meanwhile, the southbound I-17 exit ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road remains closed through Sunday, Nov. 17. Drivers can take the Jomax Road exit instead and follow signs for the detour routes.

Other closures planned as crews build new Pinnacle Peak Road on- and off-ramps:

  • The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will close from 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17.
The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will close from 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22.
The northbound I-17 exit ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will close from 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020.

Another part of the project will require changes to the frontage roads in the area. Starting Saturday, Nov. 17, crews will temporarily reconfigure portions of the north- and southbound I-17 frontage roads between Pinnacle Peak and Deer Valley roads, ADOT said, while ramps at I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road are reconstructed. These reconfigurations below are scheduled to remain in place from Nov. 17 through 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020:

  • The southbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Premier RV and Self-Storage and Adobe Drive.
  • The northbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Williams Drive and the roadway south of Adams Traditional Academy/north of the Phoenix Metro RV Park.
