North Phoenix Storm: Sudden Deluge, Amazing Rainbow

The chance of rain was just 20 percent today. That’s all Mother Nature needed. The downpour got serious just after 5 p.m. in Anthem as a series of thunderstorm cells soaked much of the I-17 corridor from Norterra to Black Canyon City.

Thunderstorms in North Phoenix & Snow in the High Country

An overnight storm dumped more than 1/3 of an inch of rain across North Phoenix by mid-morning. At Sky Harbor airport, rain set a record for the date of 0.41 inches already. Just as predicted six days ago, it’s coming up deuces for much of the region. More than 2 inches of rain has fallen in New River, in two gauges near Anthem and at Lake Pleasant, with more than 1.5 inches in Tramonto, Norterra and elsewhere in North Phoenix. Rain and showers from Rosa’s remnants could continue into tomorrow.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening, with Anthem, New River and other areas north of the Carefree Highway most at risk for heavy rains and flash floods as mountains enhance rainfall potential. The heaviest downpours are expected to affect all of Phoenix Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The remains of Hurricane Rosa began raining on North Phoenix Sunday night, with 2-3 inches possible by mid-week. Flash flooding is possible across Phoenix—and particularly in Anthem, New River and other areas north of the Carefree Highway—when the heaviest rains arrive late Monday into Tuesday.
