Reader: State Should Ban Cell Phones While Driving

While I would agree that speeding, alcohol usage and lack of seatbelts have contributed to the death toll, I do believe there are some facts sorely lacking in your article, “What’s Behind Rising Arizona Traffic Deaths.”

With absolutely no laws against cell phone usage and driving in this state, I believe that it is the single biggest reason behind all of the accidents. Every day, I see people talking on their phones, texting and watching videos while driving! This is insanity and until Arizona passes a law forbidding the use of cell phones, I believe the death toll will continue to rise.

I realize that we have a distracted driving law, but that is not enough as it is enforced at the whim of the police officer. It is about time Arizona wakes up and institutes a ban for cell phone use except hands-free bluetooth.

I am tired of being at risk every time I get in my car and drive. What will it take to institute such a law… one of the politician’s family members dying from texting and driving?
