Public-Sector Jobs: Oodles of Openings
With Arizona’s unemployment rate hovering around 5 percent for several months, there are more than 200 public-sector jobs open right here in North Phoenix, and hundreds more for those willing to commute downtown. Positions include full- and part-time.
Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD)
More than 80 open positions await certified personnel, including teachers, nurses, psychologists and coaches (cross country, swimming, tennis, among others). Open teaching positions run the gamut, from math to music, science to art, economics to French. Locations likewise are all over them map, including several area K-8 schools and all five high schools. Another 100-plus support roles are available. DVUSD “has great schedules, paid holidays, paid benefits, opportunities for advancement, and a variety of career choices,” said spokesperson Monica Allread.

City of Phoenix
The city has more than 70 openings, ranging from part-time and entry-level jobs to highly skilled positions. A sampling: equipment operator; maintenance worker; human resources director; civil engineer; security guard; landscape architect; librarian; business systems analyst; water quality inspector.

Phoenix Police Department
Separate from the city’s main jobs board, the police department has been on a recruiting spree since the new chief, Jeri Williams, came on board in October. Williams plans to hire 400 officers by the end of 2018. Starting salary is $51,480. Qualified applicants can take the required written exam June 16 or July 14.

Maricopa County
The county has about 70 wildly varied openings, including administrative assistant, attorney, graphic designer, multimedia producer, software developer and physician assistant. The majority of the positions pay $13/hour or more.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office
Separate from the county’s list of openings, Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a North Phoenix town hall in April, the department is short 80 to 100 deputies, and “several hundred” employees on the detention side.

State of Arizona
The state has more than 100 Phoenix-based job listings in a variety of fields from business and finance to legal and administrative roles. The state Supreme Court is looking for a research analyst. There are a multitude of IT jobs. Project managers and other managerial jobs are in abundance.
